Placing the Feld: Research-Creation and Belonging at Tempelhofer Feld

Placing the Feld is a student-led research-creation zine exploring belonging, agency and everyday life at Berlin’s Tempelhofer Feld. Developed within the project tutorial Sociospatial Belonging in Berlin, led by Miles Clark Silvey, at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, the zine brings together ethnographic research, interviews, creative writing, reflection and visual work.

Rather than approaching the Feld simply as a public park, the project asks how urban space shapes who feels welcome, who can take up space and how forms of belonging are (co-)created through everyday practices. Through collective fieldwork and encounters with visitors, the students explore the Feld as a space of freedom and co-creation, while also attending to its histories, exclusions and different experiences of belonging.

The resulting zine reflects the experimental character of research-creation: academic inquiry becomes intertwined with personal experience, observation, dialogue and artistic expression. In doing so, Placing the Feld offers multiple ways of seeing and sensing one of Berlin’s most contested and distinctive urban spaces.
