Zitronen in Limonade?

– 6. Jahrhundert v.Chr.)

Sanctuaries constitute one of the main elements of cultures that inhabited the ancient Mediterranean World. Societies in this geographical area organised their cities and their socio-political structure according to a principle of economic and functional consideration, as well as by taking into account religious prescriptions of considerable value. In the early stages of their urbanisation, ancient cities paid great attention to the establishment of a sacred urban landscape, i.e. a sacred cityscape, a fil-rouge articulated in processions and other forms of interaction. Therefore, sacred places constitute an essential lens through which to study the inner structure of a society and/or of a city. With a specific regard to ancient Italy, the main goal of the project is to reflect on the definition and role of sanctuaries from the late Iron Age to the Archaic period (8th-6th century BCE), a long-lasting period of intense and vibrant contacts between locals and people from the East. As a result of this cultural phenomenon, usually referred to by scholars as “Orientalising period”, the Italian peninsula experienced a turning point in its development with many small villages that became major cities of a Mediterranean character.

The project focuses on case studies in central-thyrrenian and southern Italy by analysing three interrelated aspects (Topography, Architecture, Material culture) and two connecting elements (Ritual practices, Urbanisation). While the first three shed light on the characteristics of sanctuaries, the last two will help to better understand the fil rouge created by and connected to the establishment of a sanctuary in a specific cultural context. Such an interdisciplinary approach will lead to the analysis of sanctuaries from an archaeological perspective as well as by taking into account the most recent achievements in the field of ancient religion and architecture, as well as philology and anthropology.

Students will work in small groups, each considering an exemplary sanctuary. The interdisciplinarity of the project will allow them to develop their independent research skills and, at the same time, to cooperate with each other, in a fruitful exchange aimed at fulfilling a joint-goal oriented research. In this way, in addition to the relevant scientific contents, students will learn the methodology to adopt in studying an archaeological context related to the sacred dimension.
Studies on the religion of ancient Italy together with scientific publications of the excavations as well as studies on specific topics, such as the architecture and material culture of sanctuaries, constitute the sources on which the research project will be based. The outcomes of the research project will be presented in several reports which could lead, eventually, to an online publication.
A selected bibliography will be provided during the first introductory meetings.

From „other world“ to „this world“ – Case studies on Engaged Buddhism and social political movement for sustainable development in Germany

“Engaged Buddhism “(EB) as a term first coined by Vietnamese monk Thich Nhat Hanh in 1965, which meant to evoke and induce a form of spirituality that is socially and politically aware and active. Since then, EB as phenomenon variously related to locating Buddhist answers for social and political concerns that continually has been discussed in academic circle and experimentally practices by religious groups in Asian and western countries. In Germany, EB groups instructed by different Buddhism schools have increased rapidly since 1990s. To tackle the social and political issues like peacekeeping, climate change, gender equality, poverty relief, engaged Buddhists in Germany not only take part in the traditional donation activities but also practice social engagement within their immediate surroundings. In this challenging time, the emergence and development of EB communities in Germany expresses the increasing demand of transforming and reforming original Buddhism teachings and values reconciling with modern reality.

In this Q-Team, we will firstly cover the terminological discourse on EB in Germany. Then, we do empirical case studies analysis on selected EB groups in Germany by investigating their standpoints to current issues and narratives of social engagements, teachings and practices, motivation, ethics as well as collective organization forms, trying to obtain a full know-how picture of EB groups in Germany to give potential religion development policy advice.

The Q-Team is open to all bachelor and master students interested in interdisciplinary topic of religion and economy/sustainable development. Students will conduct their own research projects in small groups. For this, they work on one specific EB group on different themes of their own choice offered in the introduction session. There are mainly two types of reading materials, i.e., traditional research articles or book chapters and the first-hand interviewed texts of engaged Buddhists being prepared by tutors before classes. Based on that, each student group is expected to present on the weekly topic and lead a critical discussion afterwards. In the meantime, tutors will co-moderate the session and bring up feedbacks and advice to assist students finding their future possible research topic. Active participation is highly welcomed.

Q-Teams in Winter Semester 2022/23 – 1/6

Ecological Interactions and Climate Change

Climate change is not only inevitable as it is already irreversible. In contrast to most past changes, the current human-made changes are abrupt and will unleash widespread extreme weather, with dramatic consequences for ecosystems and evolution. With this scenario of rapid alterations, it is urgent to improve our understanding of the ecological and evolutionary patterns by which natural populations adapt at different rates.

In this Q-Team, we will use a research-based learning approach to answer the question of “how ecological interactions affect the evolutionary rate of adaptation to change?”. The seminar will offer a venue for pro-active participation by the students in the learning process, while addressing the topics of climate change, ecological interactions, and evolution, as well as the different stages of a research project. Students will have the opportunity to perform independent research, both individually and in group, by focusing on a subordinate question defined by their favorite phylogeny and ecological interaction. By promoting interactive and hands-on sessions, the seminar will employ open-source resources such as large trait databases and software methods for estimating transition rates in adaptive traits during evolution. With this joint goal-oriented work as a research team, students will generate new knowledge useful to improve predictions of future ecosystem dynamics under climate change.

The Q-Team aims to provide an interdisciplinary and collaborative setting fitted for students of the MSc in Organismal Biology, Biodiversity and Evolution and MSc in Global Change Geography. Students of other biology degrees and political science with strong interest in biodiversity and climate change are encouraged to participate. Students should bring to the team a proactive and participative attitude in every session as well as the resolve to undertake a challenging question, learn a complex method, and assimilate interdisciplinary ideas. The ability to read and discuss scientific papers and motivation to discuss and communicate the implications of results is required.

Circle U.-Teams of winter semester 2022/23 – 2/2

We, the global governors

Today’s world is very interconnected and issues like climate change, pandemics and conflicts affect us through state borders. Various global governance institutions have been formed to tackle these issues, albeit with varying effectiveness. The course We, the global governors will explore current issues that global governance institutions are trying to solve, as well as the role of democracy in facing contemporary challenges. We will analyse and discuss to what extent democracy and civil society have penetrated various areas of global governance, as well as how greater transparency, democratization, inclusion at the local level and deliberation can make the global governance more effective.

The field, while within the domain of political science, is inherently interdisciplinary. This course will provide the theoretical and methodological knowledge in the field of global governance. As such, this course is open for master students from various disciplines, provided that students from non-political science disciplines are capable of conducting research within their fields.

We will investigate what global governance is, how it is forming and changing, as well as how it is affected by democracy. In this project we will cover the important steps of research such as forming research questions, finding literature, creating a theoretical framework, and providing empirical proofs.

Circle U.-Teams of winter semester 2022/23 – 1/2

Democracy, Bildung and Decolonialization in Afro-Brazilian Capoeira

Using the example of the Afro-Brazilian martial art capoeira, we will explore the connections between education, embodiment and democracy from a theory of Bildung perspective. To this aim, democracy will not be understood as an institutional order but as a disruptive practice that allows the voices silenced by the institutional order to be heard (Rancière). Accordingly, education for democracy (Dewey, Reichenbach, Biesta) is not understood as the socialisation of “newcomers” in the existing order but as an open-ended process “in which new political identities and subjectivities come into existence” (Biesta). This approach allows addressing education for democracy as a form of Bildung, in which self and world relations are transformed (Benner, Koller, Brinkmann). Furthermore, it highlights the experiential, embodied and situated aspects of democratic education, usually overlooked in cognitive or competence-oriented approaches. Finally, as an embodied process of Bildung, democracy education becomes accessible to qualitative, empirical research. From these perspectives, we will analyse video sequences produced within the framework of a doctoral project on the videographic exploration of experiences of Bildung during the practice of capoeira. Furthermore, to explore the potential of capoeira as a practice of democratic education, we will examine the hypothesis that presents capoeira as a decolonial pedagogy (Abib). Starting from aspects such as embodiment, emotions and community, we will discuss potential relations between democracy, Bildung and decolonialization.

Following research-based learning principles, the seminar aims to provide students with experience conducting independent qualitative research. We will perform joint goal-oriented work as a student research team aiming to produce a piece of scientific communication (e.g. an academic article, a paper, a blog or a science communication video).

The seminar is aimed at bachelor’s and master’s students interested in education, democracy, decolonial studies, body practices (martial arts, dance, circus, yoga, etc.) or qualitative research. Previous experience within the mentioned fields is desirable but not required. A prerequisite for successful participation in the seminar is regular involvement and the willingness to read and discuss academic texts and create an open and trusting working atmosphere.
