Open Discussion “perspective s: HU – How sustainable do YOU want to be?”

Dear all interested in sustainability,

You are cordially invited to our discussion evening, “HU – How sustainable do YOU want to be?” (HU – Wie nachhaltig willst du sein?) on Thursday 14 December from 6pm to 8pm in the Auditorium of the Grimm-Zentrum. The initial panel discussion will take place in German, but you are welcome to join the discussion in a second part with your question or contribution in English. The event is part of a series of discussions called perspective n that is co-organised by netzwerk n e.V. and our student initiative, the Sustainability Office. The goal of the open ‘fishbowl’, circular discussion event is to open up a debate about the next steps to be taken by and at Humboldt University to bring us towards a sustainability transformation in times of climate change, increasing biodiversity loss and a lack of justice.

Climate change, resource scarcity, economic crises and lack of justice – the challenges we face today are global and diverse, both from an ecological and social perspective. We need to develop innovative solutionsthat are sustainable at the ecological, economic and social levels. Universities, as places of critical thinking and incubators of change, play an important role in necessary processes of transformation. Humboldt University has a responsibility to develop participatory, concrete perspectives for the future and concepts for more sustainability in everyday university life, in order to fulfil its duty of being a role model for society. In addition to specific projects, the students Sustainability Office has elaborated ideas for a normalisation of sustainability in a report, which will be one of the central topics of the discussion.

We suggest the following questions to be debated in an open and critical discussion:
– Is Humboldt University currently fulfilling its duty to be an active driver of a sustainability transformation?
– How can current efforts regarding sustainability at our university be actively encouraged?
– How can all university employees be involved in this process?
– How can sustainability be supported in all institutes in the various domains of teaching, research and administration, and which structural changes are necessary for this?

We, the members of the Sustainability Office student initiative at Humboldt University, have been working for four years on a new university-wide sustainability orientation. To achieve this goal, we undertake concrete projects and develop concepts for the institutionalisation of sustainability. We are pleased to be able to discuss this important topic in with the broader university community, in cooperation with the mainly student-driven sustainability network, netzwerk n e.V.
