ANNOUNCEMENT
LANGSCAPE Symposium: Vitality of Urban Multilingualism & Language Pedagogy
8 July 2016: 10.00 am – 5.00 pm
9 July 2016: 10.00 am – 3.00 pm
Room 2249a
Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin
Unter den Linden 6
10099 Berlin
Registration by 30th May 2016
Multilingual living has received a considerable boost in recent times due to increased migration to urban contexts within and across national and regional boundaries. Super or hyperdiverse, globalised urban contexts, under a variety of different national and local policies and contexts, provides interesting challenges and opportunities for multilingual and intercultural communication, social cohesion and education. Focussing on language learning and language teacher education, this LANGSCAPE Symposium aims to explore how the Vitality of Urban Multilingualism (VUM) relates to intercultural competence, sensitivity and awareness and its role in language teaching and learning. VUM is about how societal multilingualism and individual plurilingualism thrive and flourish in urban conglomerations in terms of an array of demographic, status, and institutional support (& control) factors. We invite experts in the field of multi-/plurilingualism working on language learning and/or language teacher education to join us to discuss these issues in the symposium.
In addition to keynote speakers, the symposium in Berlin will provide a forum for presentation and discussion of preliminary data comprising interviews with language teachers across various LANGSCAPE cities/sites. We call for LANGSCAPE members to express their interest in the project on VUM & Language Pedagogy, and for a confirmation to conduct a small-scale interview study in their area/city by June 2016. This semi-structured interview study would consist of 6 main questions to be posed to language teachers. Ideally, we would like between 15-20 short interviews to be conducted by each partner. Of course, partners will determine the number of interviews according to time and capacity available. Please, send your expression of interest to conduct the interview study to langscape@hu-berlin.de by 27 March 2016. Interview questions and other materials will then be sent to you. Discussion at the symposium in Berlin of preliminary data and findings is envisaged.
For further information and registration for the symposium, please, go to: https://sites.google.com/site/langvumberlin2016/. Registration ends by 30th May 2016. A contribution for refreshments (€ 15) will be collected at the registration desk.

3 LANGSCAPE Projects
3.1 Research project: “Vitality of Urban Multilingualism” (VUM)
The research projects directorate will coordinate a collaborative research project called VUM. Research Questions of this project will be:
- What is the VUM in LANGSCAPE partners cities/towns?
- What are attitudes to multilingualism and plurilingualism in these places; How do VUM and attitudes to multilingualism relate?
- Focus on Teacher Education – a qualitative study: How is VUM reflected in educational contexts through teachers attitudes, classroom practice and school policies?
Itesh Sachdev and Katja Lochtman will keep LANGSCAPE members informed on the progress of the project. Soon, more detailed information will be made available via the LANGSCAPE blog.
At the VUM Symposium in Berlin between 8th and 9th of July 2016, first results can be discussed among participants.

LANGSCAPE will establish a printed monolingual English book series as well as an online multilingual open access publication.
3.3 Visibility
A working group within LANGSCAPE will create an official, updated and redesigned website. The LANGSCAPE Coordination team will also finalise the new poster design together with the concept of the slogan. Results of both processes will be made available to the LANGSCAPE community early in the next year.
3.4 Doctoral Support
Doctoral seminars will be established as a regular forum for exchange preferably at the annual LANGSCAPE meetings.

Dear Langscape members and friends,
The Interdisciplinary Centre for Educational Research (IZBF) at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin invites postgraduates and PhD-researchers to take part in the Doctoral Summer School 2014.
This year’s motto of the Summer School will be:
The methodology chapter in educational research –
issues in empirical and theory-driven research
The Summer School welcomes doctoral researchers from all fields of educational research. In 2014, there will be a special focus on research projects in language education. Working languages will be German and English.
The Summer School will take place on 11th and 12th September 2014 at the Campus Mitte of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
The overall aim of this year´s Summer School is to foreground important methodological issues in both empirical and theory-driven research. Guiding questions will be:
-
What basic assumptions is a research question based on?
-
What are the contexts that give relevance to individual projects?
-
Which is the scope of the expected results of a research project?
-
How are the research topic and the applied methods linked?
-
Which perspectives are opened by individual research designs and which are excluded? What are the potentials and limitations of analytic-nomothetic and interpretive-reconstructive methods?
-
Which issues referring to ethical guidelines for research are to be accounted for?
These and other related questions will be discussed in workshops and counselling sessions conducted by various experts in the field of research methodology.
Details on the program, application & registration procedure and participation fees will be announced in May 2014. Members of the IZFB qualify for a reduced rate.

Dear Langscape members,
I´d like to forward information on an interesting opportunity for support of postdoctoral researchers and projects to you:
Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin currently offers support and funding of Post-Doc Fellowships for outstanding (young) researchers from Germany (outside HU) and abroad. In general, projects from all disciplines are welcome and are merely asked to be compatible with the HU research portfolio. The funding scheme allows for various networking opportunities.
We´d like to direct this offer especially at researchers whose research and projects are closely connected to the Langscape network.
If you can think of possible candidates you would like to propose, please contact Stephan Breidbach or Lutz Küster as Langscape Co-ordinators accordingly.
You find more detailed information on the funding profile as well as requirements and deadlines for application etc. here:
